Nigerian Railway Corporation (NRC) has successfully evacuated 618 individuals following the derailment of the Abuja-Kaduna Train Service (AKTS) at KM 49 between Kubwa and Asham stations on Tuesday.

The incident occurred at approximately 11:09 a.m., according to a statement released on Tuesday in Lagos by NRC Managing Director, Dr. Kayode Opeifa.

Opeifa detailed the evacuation, stating, “A total of 618 persons, including 583 passengers, 15 NRC crew members, one medical personnel, eight cleaners, and 11 catering staff, were safely evacuated from the derailed train.”

He added that seven passengers sustained injuries of varying severity and were promptly transported to hospitals by ambulances deployed to the site.

The remaining passengers were safely returned to Idu and Kubwa stations using a rescue train dispatched from Idu.

“All passengers have since reached their destinations safely,” Opeifa confirmed.

In response to the incident, the NRC has instructed its third-party ticketing company to issue immediate refunds to all passengers on the affected train, underscoring its commitment to passenger welfare.

Opeifa also announced that an investigation, supervised by the Federal Ministry of Transport and other relevant authorities, has begun to determine the cause of the derailment.

“Abuja-Kaduna Train Services have been temporarily suspended pending site recovery, further clearance, and an official announcement of service resumption,” Opeifa stated.

He expressed regret for the inconvenience, adding, “We sincerely appreciate the understanding of our valued passengers and the public during this period.”
