The Federation of Tourism Associations of Nigeria (FTAN) has joined the people of Onitsha and cultural enthusiasts worldwide to celebrate the 24th Ofala Festival of His Majesty, Igwe Nnaemeka Alfred Achebe, CFR, mni, the revered Obi of Onitsha, describing the occasion as a resounding testament to Nigeria’s living heritage.

The Ofala Festival, held under the theme “Njiko na Ntachi” (Unity and Resilience), once again transformed the ancient city of Onitsha into a vibrant arena of colour, culture, and tradition, attracting dignitaries, traditional rulers, government officials, and international guests.

FTAN’s delegation to the event, led by its Vice President (South East), Mr. Wilson Uche Ugwu, joined other notable personalities in paying royal homage to the monarch and reaffirming the association’s commitment to promoting Nigeria’s rich cultural tourism landscape.

In a show of partnership and goodwill, FTAN also had the honour of welcoming the Honourable Minister of Art, Culture, Tourism and Creative Economy, Barr. Hannatu Musa Musawa, who led the Federal Government delegation to the grand festival. The warm reception further underscored FTAN’s collaborative ties with the Ministry and its drive to strengthen public–private synergy for the sustainable growth of the nation’s cultural and tourism sectors.

Speaking at the celebration, Mr. Ugwu lauded Igwe Achebe’s exemplary leadership and steadfast commitment to cultural preservation and tourism development in the South East.

“We celebrate His Majesty and the good people of Onitsha for upholding one of Nigeria’s most inspiring and enduring cultural legacies. The Ofala Festival continues to serve as a beacon of unity, pride, and growth for tourism across the South East and beyond,” Ugwu said.

The festival featured a spectacular display of royal pageantry, traditional dances, artistic performances, and the rich symbolism of Igbo heritage. From the royal procession to the pulsating drumbeats and colourful attire, every element reflected the spirit, resilience, and unity of the Onitsha people.

Observers noted that the 24th edition of the festival not only reaffirmed the cultural sophistication of the Onitsha kingdom but also positioned it as a key driver of cultural tourism in Nigeria.

FTAN’s participation, according to Ugwu, reflects the federation’s ongoing commitment to fostering partnerships that enhance Nigeria’s global cultural image while promoting domestic tourism.

As the curtains drew on this year’s Ofala, the message of unity and resilience resonated powerfully — reinforcing the enduring place of tradition as both a source of identity and a catalyst for socio-economic growth through tourism.
