Standards will drive economic growth, says Salim
The Director General, Standards Organisation of Nigeria ( SON), Mallam Farouk Salim, has said that economies are bound to develop rapidly, once there are standards for their products and services.
He gave this indication recently, during a week-long orientation exercise organised for staffs of the agency in Lagos.
He said that the right personnel must be put in place, if the standards organisation would achieve desired results, adding that the development informed the decision by SON to provide training for its workers.
According to him, the training would enable workers to understand the rudiments of working with SON and further assist them in building their expertise in the years ahead.
The development, he said, would result in huge productivity for the agency and the country in general.
He said standards provided by SON covers sectors such commerce, anufacturing and services, advising employees to align themselves with the visions and issions of the organisation, in order to achieve results.
Employees, Salim said, should be more proactive and bold in the course of discharging their duties, stressing that the two attributes are needed in order to successfully ascertain whether products or services of a companies have been standards or not.
He urged employees to see themselves as symbols of standards wherever they work, adding that the idea would help them to record growth at all times.
Salim said: “This training is important for both new and old employees respectively as it would afford them the opportunity to gain more experience and confidence.
The training would enable workers to start on the right footing, as well as helping them to deliver good results.
Still on the manpower, Salim said the programme would enable workers to know duties and what they are expected to do from time to time.
SON, Salim said, is one of the organisations mentioned directly or indirectly in the constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, a development, which he said has provided them more recognitions in the country.
Industries, Salim observes, are closing shops globally, due to their inability to withstand competitions foisted on them by macro-ecomomic policies of governments across the world.
The issue, SON’s DG, has done more damages to global economies, by pushing many people into labour market.
The consequences are bad, as youths are made to engage in unscrupulous activities.
Earlier, Salim had reiterated the needs for countries to adopt and implement programmes, which are sustainable and further lead bring about growth for individuals and countries.
While leading Nigerian delegates to 2022 International Standards Organisation ( ISO) conference in Abu Dhabi, Dubai weeks ago, Salim emphasised the needs for countries to fight poverty, protect environment and maintain peace and stability by 2030 in order to achieve Substainable Development Goals ( SDGs) for by 2030.
At the conference, which was attended by members from 120 countries, poverty alleviation jobs creation among others were strongly impressed on countries, which were members of ISO.
All these were done in order to help governments look forward to better the lots of their citizens.
Salim said when the SDGs agenda are well executed, they would help in making the world a better place to live.
