Former Director-General of the National Council for Arts and Culture (NCAC) and the Nigerian Tourism Development Authority (NTDA), Otunba Olusegun Runsewe, has lauded the National Association of Nigerian Travel Agencies (NANTA) for recognising the contributions of tourism journalists and industry stakeholders to Nigeria’s travel sector.

Runsewe gave the commendation in a statement following NANTA’s 50th anniversary Annual General Meeting (AGM) held in Ibadan, Oyo State, where the Association of Nigerian Journalists and Writers of Tourism (ANJET) and veteran travel writer, Mr. Frank Meke, were among those honoured.

He described the recognition as timely and reflective of NANTA’s understanding of the strategic role journalism plays in tourism development and destination marketing.

“I am very pleased that an organisation like NANTA appreciates the critical role travel journalists play in promoting and developing a country as a tourism destination,” Runsewe said. “Having spent many years in the industry, I can attest to the influence of journalism in shaping perception and driving awareness necessary for sectoral growth.”

According to him, travel journalists serve as key storytellers whose narratives inspire interest in destinations, stimulate local economies, and support the growth of tourism-related businesses.

Runsewe particularly commended ANJET for its consistency and commitment to advancing tourism discourse in Nigeria, noting that the association had remained steadfast in advocating for the sector’s growth over the years.

“ANJET has been dogged and resolute in championing the development of Nigerian tourism. During my time in office, our collaboration helped position Nigeria more prominently on the global tourism map,” he said. “It is gratifying to see NANTA acknowledge their contributions with this honour.”

He also paid glowing tribute to Frank Meke, describing him as a trailblazer in tourism journalism whose career spans over three decades.

“Meke has been at the forefront of tourism reporting in Nigeria. His insightful analyses and commentaries have deepened understanding of the sector and influenced policy direction at various levels of government,” Runsewe stated.

He added that Meke’s consistency, depth of knowledge, and passion for tourism advocacy have made him a respected voice in the industry.

“I congratulate him on this well-deserved recognition and encourage him to continue his invaluable contributions to the sector,” he said.

Runsewe further congratulated NANTA on its golden jubilee, acknowledging the association’s enduring impact on the growth and development of Nigeria’s tourism industry over the past five decades.

The anniversary event brought together key stakeholders across the travel and tourism value chain, celebrating achievements while reinforcing collaboration for the sector’s future growth.
