The Maritime Workers’ Union of Nigeria (MWUN) has announced the death of Comrade Chris Eromosele Idagbonre, a veteran trade unionist and former Vice President-General (VPG) of the Union, who passed away after a brief illness.
Idagbonre, who retired in 2025, devoted more than 25 years of meritorious service to the Maritime Workers’ Union of Nigeria, earning widespread respect for his principled leadership, commitment to workers’ welfare, and unblemished record in union administration.
A product of the Nigerian Ports Authority (NPA), Lagos, the late union leader was a stalwart of the NPA Branch of MWUN, where his career in trade unionism took root. Over the years, he rose through the ranks, distinguished by his pragmatic approach to labour issues and his passion for justice, fairness, and humanity.
Described as a bridge-builder within the labour movement, Idagbonre was known for his calm disposition and rare ability to resolve conflicts. His dedication and selfless service drew commendation from colleagues across the Union.
The President-General of MWUN, Comrade Francis Bunu Abi, paid glowing tribute to the late unionist, describing him as a dependable leader and trusted ally whose contributions to industrial harmony and internal cohesion of the Union would not be forgotten.
“Comrade Chris was someone you could always rely on, especially in moments that required wisdom and balance in resolving disputes,” Bunu said.
The Union expressed deep condolences to the immediate family, colleagues, and friends of the deceased, noting that his passing is a significant loss not only to MWUN but to the wider Nigerian labour movement.
Details of his funeral arrangements, the Union said, will be announced later by his family.
MWUN prayed for the repose of his soul, urging members to honour his legacy of service, unity, and dedication to the cause of workers.
