The President-General of the Maritime Workers’ Union of Nigeria (MWUN), Comrade Francis Bunu Abi, led members of his newly elected executive council on a courtesy visit to the Managing Director of the Nigerian Ports Authority (NPA), Dr. Abubakar Dantsoho, at the Authority’s Marina headquarters in Lagos on Wednesday.

According to MWUN, the visit was primarily to introduce the new executive team to the NPA management and reinforce the long-standing collaborative relationship between both organizations. Comrade Bunu noted that the Union and the Ports Authority are “partners in progress” in the maritime sector and cannot function effectively in isolation.

He emphasized that the meeting was important for fostering mutual understanding and strengthening operational synergy, especially as both bodies continue to play pivotal roles in sustaining efficiency across Nigeria’s port industry.

During the visit, the MWUN executives also seized the opportunity to formally congratulate Dr. Dantsoho on Nigeria’s recent success at the International Maritime Organization (IMO), where the country secured a Category C Council seat under the leadership of the Minister of Marine and Blue Economy, Hon. Adegboyega Oyetola.

Comrade Bunu described the achievement as “laudable” and a major milestone for the nation’s maritime sector, calling it a bold and fruitful step toward enhancing Nigeria’s global maritime visibility and advancing the industry’s growth trajectory.

In his response, Dr. Dantsoho expressed appreciation to the MWUN leadership for the visit and reaffirmed the Authority’s commitment to maintaining a productive partnership with the Union. He assured the delegation of continued collaboration aimed at making Nigeria’s maritime industry a vibrant hub of activity both locally and internationally.

The visit, facilitated by MWUN’s Head of Media, Comrade John Kennedy Ikemefuna, further underscores the renewed commitment of both entities to deepening labour–management cooperation in the nation’s port operations.
