In the efforts to checkmate the incessant bad and reckless preaching by some preachers in Ilorin, league of Islamic scholars have urged the authority of Ilorin Emirate Descendants Progressive Union (IEDPU) to enforce disciplinary action against any erring person irrespective of his status.

This call was made last weekend during an IEDPU meeting in Ilorin, called to find solutions to contemporary challenges facing the community, whereby bad preaching had caused disaffection among the people in the ancient city.

Muslim stakeholders, preachers, and Islamic organisations in their reaction to the call, expressed their appreciation IEDPU for the initiative, saying it is a timely intervention.

They further called for the creation of data base for all preachers in Ilorin for easy identification of violators of the laid down rules and regulations.

They said that if IEDPU enforces discipline on any scholar who misbehaves, whether on social media or in real-life sermons will restore sanity among them and the entire city.

“To create a Data Bank of all Islamic scholars, Imams and Principals of Islamic schools will enhance coordination and accountability”, they remarked.

Earlier in his opening remark, the National President of IEDPU, ACG AbdulMalik Abdulmumini Ayo (rtd) commended the Islamic scholars for their dedication and commitment to propagating Islamic values.

He urged them to continue making Ilorin proud through their messages and actions, be upright in their conduct and avoid anything that could embarrass Islam or the Ilorin Emirate, refrain from insulting or abusing one another in the social media or in sermons and always follow the Quran and Hadith as guiding principles for their preaching.

Also contributing, the Grand Khadi of the Kwara State Shariah Court of Appeal, Justice S.O. Muhammad (rtd) urged scholars to emulate the morals and values of past Islamic leaders who played key roles in protecting and sensitising the community through their sermons.

The event was well attended by various stakeholders in the Islamic community and the media.
