ECOWAS lifts economic sanctions on Niger, others

In a major diplomatic U-turn, the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) has resolved to lift economic sanctions on Niger Republic, Burkina Faso, Mali and Guinea.

The resolution was taken at the extraordinary summit on the peace, political and security situation in the ECOWAS sub-region in Abuja on Saturday.

The regional bloc, however, said the political and targeted sanctions remain.

Recall that President Bola Tinubu, who the chairman of ECOWAS has during opening speech at the Extra-ordinary Summit of ECOWAS in Abuja on Saturday called for the removal of the sanction.
