The Ijaw Youth Council Eastern Zone and the Coalition of Democratic Vanguard (CDV) have condemned alleged moves by the camp of former Governor Nyesom Wike to impeach the State Governor, Mr. Siminialayi Fubara.

The Ijaw Youth Council in an open letter in which it addressed the concerns of the Ijaw youths in the region, said, “It has come to our attention that you may be contemplating a plot to impeach Governor Siminialayi Fubara, the respected Executive Governor of Rivers State. We urge you to reconsider this action, as it could have dire consequences and potentially incite an ethnic war between the Ijaw community and any other rebellious ethnic group.”

This came as the Coalition of Democratic Vanguard in very strong terms condemns any attempt to impeach Governor Fubara, saying such moves will undermine the democratic process in the state and urges all parties involved to respect the will of the people and prioritize the betterment of Rivers State

According to the Ijaw Youth Council Eastern Zone, for over 16 years, the Ijaw people have patiently awaited a leader who understands and addresses our struggles, and Governor Fubara has emerged as that beacon of hope. He has consistently demonstrated his commitment to inclusivity, progress, and unity throughout his tenure. Under his leadership, people have witnessed policies that promote justice, equality, and opportunities for all.

The letter signed by Hon. Comrade Tamuno Kpokpo and Sofiri Robert Jaja, chairman and secretary respectively, said:  “We, the Ijaw people, are a brave and resilient ethnic group. We have a rich history as warriors, and we cannot be intimidated. However, we firmly believe that violence and division serve no purpose in fostering a prosperous Rivers State. Instead, we advocate for dialogue, understanding, and the pursuit of common goals.

“Nyesom Wike, we implore you to abandon any plans that may destabilize our state. Instead, let us come together in a spirit of cooperation and collaboration. Engage with Governor Fubara and other stakeholders in meaningful conversations that address the concerns of all ethnic groups. By doing so, we can build bridges and foster an environment of peace and progress.”

They further said that the Ijaw Youth Council Eastern Zone stands ready to support efforts that promote peace, unity, and the advancement of our great state. We urge you to join us in this noble quest, so that together, we can build a Rivers State that future generations will be proud of.

In a similar development, Coalition of Democratic Vanguard in a statement titled; Coalition of Democratic Vanguard warns against impeachment attempts in Rivers State, said: “At the core of any functioning democracy lies the principle of free and fair elections, which provide citizens with the opportunity to choose their leaders, and Rivers people have chosen Sir Siminalayi Fubara, GSSRS. Impeachment attempts should be rooted in concrete evidence of wrongdoing and carried out only through legitimate channels, ensuring transparency and accountability. The Coalition of Democratic Vanguard emphasizes that any attempts to impeach Governor Fubara and Rt. Hon Edison Ehie must adhere to these democratic principles, if not, it will be fully resisted by Rivers people.”

In the statement signed by Comr. Thompson Orumbo and Chief Peter Nwabunna, chairman and secretary respectively, the group said that the state has made significant strides in the pursuit of development and stability under the leadership of Governor Fubara. “The governor has championed policies and initiatives that have positively impacted the lives of the citizens. Political squabbles and power struggles should not hinder the progress, and the people’s mandate must be respected.”

The group further called on Chief Nyesom Wike to prioritize the interests of the people and set aside personal and political interest. “The unity and stability of Rivers State should be the primary goal, with cooperative efforts dedicated to achieving sustained development, improved infrastructure, and the welfare of its citizens,” they added.

They further said that if those engaging in the move have genuine concerns regarding the performance or integrity of Governor Fubara and Rt Hon Edison Ehie, they should first present concrete evidence through appropriate channels such as investigations or inquiries. “This would ensure that any actions taken are based on facts instead of subjective perceptions or personal motives.”
